This month the EcoEvoRxiv preprint server begins welcoming submissions in Portuguese and Spanish, in addition to English. Home to over 1,000 empirical, theoretical, and review preprints in a range of ecology, evolution, and conservation topics, EcoEvoRxiv is a service of the Society for Open, Reliable, and Transparent Ecology and Evolutionary biology (SORTEE). The preprint server is hosted by the California Digital Library under the eScholarship Publishing program.
EcoEvoRxiv’s move toward multilingualism reflects the community’s desire to reduce barriers to sharing and discovering non-English research. “The reliance on English language publications to communicate scientific findings is clearly a hindrance to the open sharing of scientific knowledge, and we at SORTEE see ways we can help,” they write. New moderators fluent in Spanish and Portuguese have been trained to support researchers writing in these languages. Scholars of ecology and evolutionary biology fluent in other languages and interested in serving as moderators should contact the EcoEvoRxiv team for consideration as its multilingual services develop.
EcoEvoRxiv launched in January 2019 on the Center for Open Science’s Open Science Framework, and re-launched as part of the California Digital Library’s eScholarship program in October 2022. It is the second preprint service hosted by CDL, joining EarthArXiv, which joined eScholarship in October 2020.
