The University of California, via the California Digital Library, maintains a subscription with Springer Nature that includes access to the British Journal of Cancer.  As a result, the British Journal of Cancer grants a discount to UC authors who wish to pay an article processing charge (APC) to publish their articles open access.

Who is covered?

Corresponding authors who are affiliated with any UC campus, UC Office of the President, or Lawrence Berkeley Lab.

What journals are covered?

British Journal of Cancer, an otherwise subscription journal which allows authors to choose to pay to make their articles Open Access immediately upon publication.

What is the discount?

Approximately 25%; exact costs are available from BJC’s list of Publishing Licenses.

How can I apply this discount?

After a manuscript is accepted, all authors will be asked to download and sign their preferred publishing license.  Authors that choose a Creative Commons open access license instead of the standard BJC license will be asked to complete a payment form and make the appropriate payment before publication.  Authors should select the appropriate discounted cost on this payment form.

What licenses are available?

Creative Commons licenses CC BY or CC BY-NC-SA. The cost to select CC BY is higher than the cost to select CC BY-NC-SA.

For more information about the importance of license selection and Creative Commons in open access publishing, see this NEJM Perspective.

What is the business model behind this arrangement?

The British Journal of Cancer offers this discount to all institutional subscribers independently of license negotiations; it is not explicitly included in subscription agreements.  The University of California does not pay for this discount, nor does UC receive any refund on subscription costs when UC-affiliated authors pay to publish in the British Journal of Cancer.

More information about publishing Open Access with BJC can be found on BJC’s For Authors page (specifically in the Publishing Licenses section).
