The systems that disseminate the results of research and scholarship are breaking down. The dysfunctions include the escalating prices of journals and rapid increases in the volume of information.

Correcting these dysfunctions will:

• Increase the reach and impact of your work by making it more accessible.
• Create efficiencies in the advance of knowledge.
• Create advances in the timeliness, variety, and interconnectedness of scholarship.
• Allow the University to maintain its world-class library collections in support of research, teaching, and public service.

As a researcher who writes and edits scholarly output, you can take action to support sustainable scholarly communication. Specifically, you can manage your intellectual property and use alternative forms of publishing.

As members of the scholarly community, there are additional actions and stances you can take to create change and support sustainable systems of scholarly communication:

• Wield your influence with publishers
• Consider the role of scholarly societies and promulgate best practices for society publishing.
• Support publishing experiments and new business models
